Chinese grammar has many special rules.

Most words do not change their shape. In English, words change for time or number. In Chinese, words stay the same. You use small words called particles to show meaning. One type of rule is called reduplication. This is when you say a word or part of a word twice. You can use this to name family members. For example, you can say "māma" for mother. It can also make words sound cute. You might say "gǒugǒu" to mean a puppy.

Another important part is the use of classifiers. These are also called measure words. You must use a classifier when you use numbers with nouns. Each noun often has its own special classifier. For example, some nouns need one type of word to count them. You also use a special word order. Most sentences follow a subject-verb-object pattern. This is the same way we use English. This makes the language very fun to study.
