As gold became hard to find, some people grew angry. They blamed Chinese workers for low wages. This led to unfair laws in California. Some laws even tried to stop Chinese women from coming.

In 1882, the government passed the Chinese Exclusion Act. President Chester A. Arthur signed it. This law stopped Chinese laborers from entering for ten years. It was the first major law to block a specific group of people. The law also made it hard for Chinese residents to become citizens. It was made permanent in 1902. In 1898, the Supreme Court ruled that children born in the U.S. were citizens. This law stayed in place for a long time. It was finally ended in 1943. After that, more people could move to the United States.
