It is one of the three biggest state media groups in the country. CCTV is part of a large organization called the China Media Group. This group is supervised by the National Radio and Television Administration. The station is also led by the Publicity Department of the Chinese Communist Party. It plays a very important role in how people in China see the world.

Creating a national TV station involves many careful steps. In 1954, Mao Zedong suggested that China should have its own station. Later, leaders included television in the country's first five-year plan. To learn how to do this, workers visited stations in the Soviet Union and Germany. They studied how those stations worked before returning to Beijing. On 1 May 1958, the station officially signed on as Peking Television. It began airing its first programs on 2 September of that same year.

CCTV has grown and changed quite a lot over many decades. In 1978, the station changed its name to China Central Television. This change also included a brand new logo for the network. In the late 1970s, the station only broadcast in the evenings. It usually closed down every night at midnight. During school holidays, it sometimes showed programs during the day for students. By 1980, the station began using microwave technology to send news from different studios.

One of its most famous shows is the evening news, Xinwen Lianbo. This program airs every day at 7:00 pm Beijing time. An internal survey shows that nearly 500 million people watch this show. Another massive program is the CCTV New Year's Gala. This special show for the Chinese New Year is the most-watched program on the network. It can reach more than 90% of the audience across the nation.

CCTV also works to share its programs with the rest of the world. In 2000, it launched CCTV-9, which is a channel that uses only English. This channel was designed to reach viewers in other countries. In 2016, the station's foreign language services became part of a group called CGTN. The network has also worked with other media groups in places like Russia. Some people, such as those at Freedom House, say the station follows government rules very closely. They believe the news might not always be fully independent because of these rules.
