Today, it serves as a very important place for the government. It houses the offices and homes for the leaders of the Chinese Communist Party and the State Council. Because it holds so much power, people often use the name Zhongnanhai to talk about the entire central government of China.

The complex is divided into two main sections. These sections reflect the two different ways the country is led. Northern Zhongnanhai is the headquarters for the State Council. This area includes the offices of senior leaders and their main meeting rooms.

Southern Zhongnanhai is the headquarters for the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee. This part holds the offices for groups like the Politburo and the Secretariat. Leaders use these buildings to carry out daily tasks and hold meetings with visitors from other countries.

Zhongnanhai has a very long history that began as a beautiful garden.

During the Ming dynasty, the Yongle Emperor started a project to reclaim land around Taiye Lake. He wanted to create a peaceful garden retreat. Over many centuries, different emperors built many pavilions and temples along the lakeshores. By the late Qing dynasty, it became a center for government. Leaders like Empress Dowager Cixi lived there and only went to the Forbidden City for special ceremonies.

At first, many buildings were old and the gardens were overgrown. Leaders had to use old houses built for servants to live in. Mao Zedong, a top leader, had favorite spots in the compound. He liked the Library of Chrysanthemum Fragrance to read his books. He also enjoyed the Poolside House near a large indoor swimming pool.

Today, Zhongnanhai is a very private place. Most people are not allowed to enter the compound.

The main entrance is the Xinhuamen, or "Gate of New China." Near this gate, a wall features the words "Serve the People." This phrase was written by Mao Zedong. While people can see some footage of meetings on television, the inside of the buildings remains mostly hidden. This helps keep the area secure while the leaders work.
