He worked as a rubber tapper, which is a person who collects rubber from trees. Chico was born on December 15, 1944, in a place called Seringal Bom Futuro. His family lived in the state of Acre, near a small town called Xapuri. Growing up, Chico faced many hard jobs and challenges. He did not learn to read or write until he was 18 years old. A man named Euclides Fernando Távora helped him learn by using newspaper clippings. These stories showed Chico that many people were being treated unfairly.

Chico wanted to protect both the forest and the people living in it. He helped form the Xapuri Rubber Tappers Union to help his fellow workers. One way they protected the trees was through a method called an 'empate.' This was a peaceful protest where workers blocked paths to stop people from cutting down trees. He also helped start the National Council of Rubber Tappers in 1985. This group met in the capital city of Brasília to talk about big problems. They discussed how cattle ranching and new roads were hurting the rainforest. They wanted to find ways to live in the forest without destroying it.

Chico had a very important idea called "extractive reserves." These are special areas of forest land managed by local people. In these reserves, people can gather things like nuts, fruit, oil, and fibers. This way, they can make a living while keeping the forest healthy. Chico traveled all the way to Washington, D.C., in March 1987 to talk to leaders. He wanted groups like the World Bank to support these new forest reserves. His hard work earned him several awards, including one from the United Nations. He believed that strong communities and good education were the keys to a better future.

Because he fought so hard for the land, some people were angry with him. A man named Darly Alves da Silva tried to take over part of a rubber reserve. Chico led a campaign to stop the forest from being cleared for a ranch. This conflict became very dangerous for Chico and his community. Sadly, Chico was killed in his home in Xapuri on December 22, 1988. This happened just one week after his 44th birthday. His death was a huge event that made people all over the world pay attention. Many people felt sad, but they also felt a need to act.

Even though Chico is gone, his ideas changed the world. After he died, many groups joined together to protect the Amazon. This included the Alliance of Forest Peoples, which brought together Indigenous people and rubber tappers. Because of this movement, the Brazilian government began to create more extractive reserves. They also worked to mark official lands for Indigenous groups like the Kayapo and Yanomami. Today, a large agency in Brazil called the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation works to protect nature. His life shows how one person can help save a whole forest.
