He worked as a rubber tapper. This means he collected rubber from trees. Chico grew up in a family of workers. He did not learn to read until he was 18. He learned by reading news stories. These stories showed him that life was unfair for many people.

Chico wanted to protect the forest. He also wanted to protect the rights of local people. He helped start a union for workers. They used a way called an 'empate' to stop forest damage. This meant workers blocked paths to save the trees. He also helped create the idea of extractive reserves. These are lands where people can gather nuts and fruit without hurting the forest.

Chico worked hard to talk to leaders in other countries. He wanted them to help save the Amazon. Sadly, some people hurt Chico because of his work. He was killed in 1988. His death made the whole world pay attention. Today, a large group in Brazil is named after him. It helps protect nature and all living things.
