Ethnic Russians account for 5.4% of the population.

This is a major shift from previous years. For example, in 1991, only 75.8% of pupils studied in Ukrainian. By 2023, that number reached 100%.

The economy relies heavily on agriculture. Farmers grow winter wheat and sugar beets as primary products. They also produce barley, corn, tobacco, and hemp. Cattle breeding is another vital part of the local economy. Industry is mostly concentrated in the capital, Cherkasy. This city has a developed chemical industry. It also features machine building, furniture making, and agricultural processing. The region is divided into four large districts called raions. These include Cherkasy, Uman, Zolotonosha, and Zvenyhorodka.

Visitors can explore many notable sites in the oblast. Sofiivka is a famous attraction. The region is also linked to the history of Taras Shevchenko.
