Chemical formula

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A chemical formula is a special way to show information about atoms. Atoms are the tiny building blocks that make up every chemical compound or molecule. Instead of using long words, a formula uses symbols, numbers, and sometimes other marks like brackets or plus signs. You might see small numbers written below the symbols, which are called subscripts. A formula is not the same thing as a chemical name. Names use words, but a formula is just a single line of symbols.

There are different ways these formulas work. An empirical formula shows the simplest ratio of the atoms in a substance. For example, the empirical formula for glucose shows that it has twice as many hydrogen atoms as carbon and oxygen. A molecular formula is different because it shows the exact number of each atom in a molecule. For glucose, the molecular formula is C6H12O6. This tells us there are exactly six carbon atoms, twelve hydrogen atoms, and six oxygen atoms.

Sometimes, scientists use a condensed formula to show more detail. This type of formula acts like a map for how atoms are bonded together. Bonding is how atoms stick to each other to form a group. A condensed formula can show if atoms are joined by single or double bonds. For example, the formula for ethanol is C2H5OH. This helps show how the atoms are connected in a simple way. However, these formulas cannot show very complex shapes or large groups of atoms.

Because formulas are limited, they can sometimes be confusing. Some molecules are called isomers, which means they have the same formula but different shapes. For instance, glucose, fructose, galactose, and mannose all share the same molecular formula. They use the same atoms, but those atoms are connected in different ways. To show the true shape of a molecule, scientists use a structural formula. This is a drawing that shows the exact spatial relationship between all the atoms.

Chemical formulas are very useful tools for science. They help scientists keep track of atoms during chemical reactions. These reactions are the ways that substances change into new things. By using formulas, scientists can balance chemical equations. This ensures they are following the rules of how atoms and electric charges are conserved. Whether they are looking at simple water or complex crystals, formulas help make the invisible world of atoms easier to understand.
