He was a dentist who spent much of his life fighting for independence. Jagan wanted Guyana to be free from the rule of the United Kingdom. He also worked to give more power to workers in the sugar industry. His life was defined by his efforts to change how his country was governed. He eventually became the President of Guyana in 1992.

Jagan was born on March 22, 1918, in Ankerville, a rural village.

His parents were Indian Hindus who moved from India to British Guiana. They arrived as indentured labourers, which means they worked under contract. His family lived in poverty and worked in the cane fields. His father worked as a head driver on an estate. To help Jagan avoid field work, his father used $500 of family savings. This money allowed Jagan to study dentistry in the United States.

Jagan's education took him to several different places. He studied at Howard University in Washington, D.C. To pay for his life there, he worked as an elevator operator. He also worked as a door-to-door salesman in New York City. Later, he attended Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated in 1942 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. After he returned to Guyana, he opened a dental practice in Georgetown.

His political career began with the founding of the People's Progressive Party (PPP). He started the party with his wife, Janet, and Forbes Burnham. The PPP grew quickly after protests regarding workers at a sugar plantation. In 1953, Jagan won a general election and became Chief Minister. This was a historic moment for the region. He became the first person of Indian descent to lead a government outside of India.

However, Jagan's first term as leader ended very quickly. The British government worried about his political views and feared a communist revolution. On October 9, 1953, the British suspended the constitution. They sent troops to Georgetown on a ship called HMS Superb. Jagan was arrested and removed from his position after only 133 days. He later faced house arrest and spent six months in prison.

During the following years, Guyanese politics became divided by race. This was often called "apan jhaat," meaning "vote for your own kind." A political split occurred between Jagan and Forbes Burnham. Burnham eventually founded the People's National Congress (PNC). Jagan's faction was mostly Indo-Guyanese, while Burnham's was mostly Afro-Guyanese. This division shaped much of the country's political landscape for many years.

Jagan returned to leadership roles in later years. He served as the Premier of British Guiana from 1961 to 1964. After a long gap in his leadership, he won the 1992 general election. This election was noted as the first "free and fair" election in decades. Jagan then served as the President of Guyana.

Jagan's legacy is tied to the independence of his nation. He moved from being a dentist to a central figure in Caribbean history. His work with trade unions and his fight against colonial rule changed Guyana forever. He remains a significant figure in the study of South American politics.
