He spent his life working to change how his country was run. Jagan was born on March 22, 1918, in a small village called Ankerville. His parents were from India and moved to Guyana to work. They lived in poverty and worked hard in the sugar cane fields. Jagan was the oldest of 11 children in his family. His parents worked as indentured labourers on local estates.

Jagan wanted a different life than working in the fields. His father sent him to the United States to study dentistry. He used his family's savings of $500 to go to school. Jagan lived in Washington, D.C., for two years at Howard University. He worked as an elevator operator to pay his way. Later, he studied at Northwestern University in Chicago. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1942.

When he returned to Guyana, Jagan began his political work. He helped start the People's Progressive Party with his wife, Janet. He also worked with a man named Forbes Burnham. Jagan wanted Guyana to be independent from the United Kingdom. He also fought for more rights for workers in the sugar industry. In 1953, he won a big election and became Chief Minister. This made him the first leader of Indian descent outside of India.

His time as leader was very difficult and short. The British government did not agree with his ideas. They suspended the constitution and sent troops to Georgetown in 1953. Jagan was arrested and removed from his job after 133 days. He later faced house arrest and even spent time in prison. During this time, politics in Guyana became divided by race. This was a hard period for many people living there.

Jagan never stopped working for his political goals. He served as the Premier of British Guiana from 1961 to 1964. Many years passed before he had another big chance to lead. In 1992, he won a general election that was called free and fair. This victory allowed him to become the President of Guyana. He held this high position until he died in 1997.
