She is best remembered for her profound impact on religious music through her lyrical compositions. Her most significant contribution is the hymn "Just As I Am," which she wrote in 1836. This specific hymn became a global phenomenon, translated into nearly every living language of the nineteenth century. Elliott’s work provided a sense of spiritual assurance to many people. Her ability to turn personal struggle into universal comfort defines her literary legacy.

Elliott's writing process was deeply connected to her personal faith and physical condition. For much of her life, she was an invalid, meaning she suffered from chronic illness. This physical limitation meant she often could not participate in social circles or public worship. Instead, she turned to writing to express her inner thoughts and religious convictions. She often published her works anonymously to avoid being ostentatious, or showy. This modesty allowed her words to speak for themselves without the distraction of her name.

Her career involved several distinct roles in the world of religious publishing. First, she served as an editor for the *Christian Remembrancer Pocket Book*. She managed the editorial supervision of this annual publication for twenty-five years, starting in 1834. Second, she was a significant contributor to *The Invalid's Hymn Book*. In the 1854 sixth edition, she had contributed 112 hymns to the collection. She also wrote various collections of poetry and hymns, such as *Hours of Sorrow* in 1836.

Charlotte was born on March 18, 1789, at Westfield Lodge in Brighton, England. Her family background was deeply rooted in the religious traditions of Great Britain. Her maternal grandfather, Henry Venn, was a clergyman associated with the Clapham Sect. This group of ministers helped promote the Great Awakening of the 18th century. Charlotte was the third of six children born to Eling Venn and Charles Elliott. Her brothers, Henry Venn Elliott and Edward Bishop Elliott, both entered the clergy. Henry even founded St Mary's Hall in Brighton.

Significant shifts occurred in Elliott's life due to her health and spiritual experiences. In 1821, a severe sickness changed her social life and her personal outlook. During a visit to her home in Clapham, she met the Rev. Dr. Cesar Malan. After a conversation about her spiritual peace, she committed her life to Christ on May 9, 1822. This date was considered by her sister to be the "birthday of her soul." Despite various travels to Normandy and Switzerland for her health, she remained a frequent sufferer. She eventually settled in Torquay in 1845 before returning to Brighton.

The musical success of her work reached new heights through collaboration. While she wrote the lyrics, the music for "Just As I Am" was composed by William B. Bradbury. He published the musical setting in 1849. This combination of text and melody had a massive reach. It is noted that tens of thousands of people committed their lives to Christ while the hymn was played. The hymn's influence was so broad that it was used by the evangelist Billy Graham in almost every one of his crusades.

Elliott's influence is measured by the sheer scale of her literary and musical reach. She authored approximately 150 hymns and numerous poems throughout her lifetime. Historian Kenneth Osbeck stated that "Just As I Am" touched more hearts than any other song ever written. Her legacy is often viewed as an amazing achievement for a woman facing depression and illness. She died on September 22, 1871, at her home in Brighton. She was buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's in Hove alongside her brothers.
