He almost always wears a shirt with a special zigzag pattern. This pattern first appeared on his shirt on December 21, 1950. By the next year, his shirt became a polo shirt with a collar. Most of his friends call him by his full name, Charlie Brown. His sister Sally calls him "big brother," but his dog Snoopy calls him "the round-headed kid." Other friends like Peppermint Patty and Marcie call him "Chuck" or "Charles."

Charlie Brown first appeared in a strip called Li'l Folks on May 30, 1948. He made his official debut in the Peanuts strip on October 2, 1950. In the very beginning, he was only four years old. He was much more of a prankster back then. As the years went by, he aged very slowly. By the 1960s, he was old enough to go to elementary school. He stayed eight years old for most of the strip's long history.

The character became huge in the 1960s when Peanuts reached 355 million readers.

In 1965, a famous TV special called A Charlie Brown Christmas was made. It was a big success and reached over 15 million homes. Charlie Brown even traveled to space in a way! The Apollo 10 mission named its command module "Charlie Brown" in 1969. An artist even drew Charlie Brown in a spacesuit for the astronauts. This was a very special moment for the character.

Charlie Brown's life is a bit like the lives of real people. Charles Schulz said he made Charlie Brown a caricature of the average person. He believed most people know more about losing than winning. The character's shy feelings were inspired by Schulz himself. Even his love for the Little Red-Haired Girl came from Schulz's own life. The original comic strip finally ended on February 13, 2000. This was the day after Schulz passed away, but people still enjoy his work today.
