It was created by an artist named Quino. The stories follow a smart six-year-old girl named Mafalda. She thinks deeply about big topics like world peace. She often asks her parents very serious questions. These questions can leave her parents feeling quite confused. Mafalda is a kind and fair person. She even tries to do what is right for her friends. One thing she always dislikes is eating soup.

Mafalda has a group of friends with different personalities. Felipe is a dreamer who loves playing cowboys. He is often lost in his own imagination. Manolito is the son of a shopkeeper. He cares a lot about business and money. Susanita is a girl who loves to gossip. She dreams of becoming a housewife one day. Miguelito is a younger boy who likes to debate. There is also a girl named Libertad, which means "freedom" in Spanish. Mafalda even has a little brother named Guille. He actually loves soup, which is the opposite of Mafalda!

The history of the strip is very interesting. Quino first created Mafalda in 1963. At first, it was meant to be an advertisement. The characters were going to use products from a company. All the names were even supposed to start with the letter "M." However, the artist and his friend did not publish it that way. Instead, the strip was first published in a magazine called Primera Plana. This happened on 29 September 1964. Later, the stories moved to a newspaper called El Mundo.

Many things changed as the years went by. The strip ran from 1964 until 25 June 1973. In 1965, new friends like Manolito and Susanita joined the group. The newspaper El Mundo closed in December 1967. This meant the strip had to pause for six months. It came back in a new magazine in June 1968. Because of new rules, Quino had to finish drawings earlier. This meant he could not always talk about current news. He eventually stopped the main series in 1973.

Even after the strip ended, Mafalda stayed important. Quino drew her again to help promote human rights. In 1976, he used her to help UNICEF. He did this for the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The comic strip became very popular all over the world. People in Europe, Asia, and Quebec love it. You can find the stories in many different books. Some people have even made animated cartoons about her. Mafalda remains a masterful way to look at the world.
