As he grew up, Russell began to wonder about faith. He joined the Congregational Church when he was thirteen. As a teenager, he wrote Bible verses on sidewalks with chalk. He wanted to tell people about his beliefs. At age sixteen, he started questioning some religious traditions. He studied many different religions to find answers. In 1870, an Adventist minister inspired his belief in the Bible. This led him to focus deeply on religious study.

Russell also had disagreements with other religious writers. He once worked with a man named Nelson Barbour. They disagreed about certain dates and religious ideas. Because of these debates, Russell started his own work. He sold his clothing stores to fund his ministry. He moved his headquarters to Brooklyn, New York, in 1908.

After Russell died in 1916, his movement changed a lot. The followers of his ideas began to split into different groups. Some groups kept the name Bible Students. One group, the Watch Tower Society, became known as Jehovah's Witnesses in 1931.
