He was born on February 15, 1812, in Killingly, Connecticut. His family had lived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony since 1660. Tiffany learned about business by helping at his father's general store. He also worked at his father's cotton mill. These early jobs helped him learn how to run a company. He eventually moved to New York City to start his own dream.

In 1837, Tiffany and his friend John B. Young opened a small shop. They borrowed $1,000 from Tiffany's father to start it. Their first day of business only brought in $4.98 in sales. Even so, they stayed in business for many years. They sold items like clocks, porcelain, and glassware. By 1841, the store grew and changed its name. It became known as Tiffany, Young, and Ellis.
