Chalk is a soft, white, and porous rock. Porous means it has many tiny holes inside. It is a type of limestone made of a mineral called calcite.

This rock is very special because it is made of tiny parts from living things. Most of it comes from the shells of microscopic plankton. These tiny creatures lived in the ocean long ago. When they died, their hard parts fell to the sea floor.

The way chalk forms is a slow process. Millions of years ago, tiny organisms like coccolithophores settled on the ocean floor. They left behind tiny calcite plates. These plates were very small, some only 0.5 to 4 microns in size. As more shells piled up, they formed thick layers of sediment. Because the shells were already stable, they did not cement together quickly. This is why chalk has so many holes.

We can learn a lot about history from these rocks. Most chalk in Western Europe formed during the Late Cretaceous Epoch. This was between 100 and 61 million years ago. The name Cretaceous actually comes from the Latin word "creta," which means chalk.

Scientists find these deposits in many places. They are in France, Germany, and Denmark. They are also found in North America, Egypt, and Australia.

Chalk is used for many different jobs today. Many students use it to write on blackboards. Some blackboard chalk is made from gypsum, which is a different mineral.

Other people use magnesium carbonate chalk to help with a grip. Gymnasts and rock climbers use it to keep their hands dry. It is also used in agriculture to help soil. Farmers add it to soil that has high acidity.

You might see chalk in your own life without knowing it. It is used as a mild abrasive in toothpaste to help clean teeth.

Some people even use colored chalk to make art on sidewalks.

In England, people have even used the white rock to make huge pictures on hills. They do this by clearing away grass to show the white stone underneath. One example is the Litlington White Horse in East Sussex.
