Central Luzon is an administrative region in the Philippines known as Region III.

It is located on the large island of Luzon. The region is unique because it contains the most provinces of any region in the country. It is made up of seven provinces: Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, and Zambales.

The region also includes two highly urbanized cities, Angeles and Olongapo. Among the cities, San Jose del Monte is the most populous. The name Central Luzon refers to its geographic position on the island. American colonialists coined this specific name after the First Philippine Republic was defeated.

The geography of the region is defined by its massive flatlands. Central Luzon contains the largest plain in the Philippines. This vast, flat area is ideal for large-scale agriculture. Because of this, the region produces most of the nation's rice supply. This importance earned it the nickname "Rice Granary of the Philippines."

The fertile soil and flat terrain allow farmers to grow massive amounts of food for the whole country.

Human history in this region began with very early migrations. Researchers believe the earliest modern humans arrived during the Paleolithic period about 40,000 years ago. These people are believed to be the ancestors of the Aeta peoples. Other migration waves occurred between 25,000 and 12,000 years ago. The most recent major wave involved the Austronesian peoples around 7,000 years ago. Groups like the Kapampangan, Sambal, and Sinauna originally lived in southern Luzon. Over many centuries, these groups moved northward into the current territories of Central Luzon.

The borders of the provinces changed significantly during the Spanish colonial era. In 1571, the Spanish established the Provincia de La Pampanga. This was the largest area in Central Luzon at that time. Soon after, in 1578, the provinces of Bulacan and Zambales were created from Pampanga.

Bataan was established later on January 11, 1757, by Governor-General Pedro Manuel Arandia. Nueva Ecija was created as a military district in 1701 but became a regular province on April 25, 1801. Tarlac was the final province to be established in 1873.

Migration patterns deeply influenced the culture and language of the region. In the 19th century, the rice and tobacco industries drew many Ilocano settlers to the north. They moved into Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, and south central Zambales. As a result, Ilocano became the lingua franca, or common language, in those northern areas. Tagalog also became a widespread lingua franca due to various migrations. Many settlers assimilated into different groups through marriage or by selling their lands. This created a complex mix of Kapampangan, Tagalog, Ilocano, and indigenous identities.

The region also faced significant natural and political challenges. In 1735, a dangerous storm and a tsunami called a tromba marina hit Baler. The disaster destroyed the old town settlement. Survivors, including those from Dumagat and Bugkalot origins, had to flee to Ermita Hill.

During World War II, Central Luzon was a major site of conflict. It was an early target for Japanese attacks because of U.S. military bases. General Douglas MacArthur planned to defend the area using positions in Bataan and Corregidor.

Today, Central Luzon remains a vital economic and cultural hub. It connects various ethnic groups and linguistic traditions through its shared geography. The interaction between the massive rice plains and the migrating populations shaped its modern identity. From the ancient Aeta ancestors to the colonial-era province shifts, the region's history is written in its land and its people. It continues to serve as a primary source of food and a central part of the Philippine archipelago.
