Cell division

Cell division is the amazing way one cell becomes two. This process is how living things grow and stay healthy.

Without it, a tiny seed could never become a huge tree. A single fertilized egg could never grow into a human. For simple life like an amoeba, one division creates a whole new organism. In larger bodies, it helps fix parts that are broken or worn out.

It is the foundation of life itself.

Before a cell can split, it must follow a careful plan. This happens during a time called interphase. First, the cell grows larger during the G1 phase. Next, in the S phase, the cell makes a copy of its DNA. This DNA contains all the instructions for the cell.

Then, the cell grows one more time in the G2 phase. Finally, the cell enters the M phase to actually divide. This step-by-step way of working ensures everything is ready.

There are two main ways complex cells divide. The first way is mitosis, which makes two identical daughter cells. These cells have the same number of chromosomes as the parent. The second way is meiosis, which is used for sexual reproduction. Meiosis is special because it reduces the number of chromosomes by half.

This results in four daughter cells called gametes. These cells carry only one copy of each chromosome type. This process helps create new life through reproduction.

Cells use special checkpoints to stay safe and accurate. These checkpoints act like inspectors on a factory line. They check if the cell is the right size. They also look for any damage to the DNA.

If damage is found, the cell can stop its progress. This is controlled by proteins called cyclins and kinases. These proteins help the cell move smoothly through its cycle. If a cell cannot pass a checkpoint, it may exit the cycle entirely.

Different types of life use different methods to divide. Bacteria and archaea are simple and use binary fission. In this method, the genetic material splits equally into two new cells.

Some bacteria even use a method called budding. In humans, the scale of division is truly huge. A single human body experiences about 10 quadrillion cell divisions in a lifetime. This constant work keeps us growing and keeps our bodies running every single day.
