Cefazolin

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Cefazolin is a type of antibiotic. An antibiotic is a medicine that kills bacteria. This medicine belongs to a group called cephalosporins. It works by attacking the cell walls of bacteria. Bacteria need these walls to stay strong. Cefazolin stops them from making new walls. Without walls, the bacteria break apart and die. This makes the medicine bactericidal. That means it kills the bacteria instead of just stopping their growth.

Doctors use it for many things. It treats infections in the skin and lungs. It can also treat infections in the bones or joints. Sometimes, doctors give it before surgery. This helps prevent new infections from starting. It is often given as a shot into a muscle or a vein.

Some people might have side effects. These are unwanted changes in the body. Common ones include vomiting or diarrhea. Some people may also get a rash. Most people can take it safely. Even people with penicillin allergies can often use it. However, doctors will watch them closely. This is because some people might still have an allergic reaction.
