Cefazolin

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Cefazolin is a special kind of medicine called an antibiotic. It belongs to a group known as first-generation cephalosporins. Doctors use it to fight many different types of bacterial infections. It can treat skin infections like cellulitis or infections in the lungs. It also helps with infections in the bones, joints, and urinary tract.

Sometimes, doctors give it to prevent infections during or after surgery. It is even used to protect babies from certain diseases during birth. Because it is so important, the World Health Organization calls it an essential medicine.

This medicine works in a very specific way to kill bacteria. Bacteria need a strong outer layer called a cell wall to stay alive. Cefazolin stops the bacteria from building this wall. It does this by binding to special proteins inside the bacteria. These proteins are called penicillin-binding proteins.

Without these proteins working, the bacteria cannot make a new wall. Because the bacteria are always breaking down their old walls, they eventually burst apart. This makes cefazolin bactericidal, which means it kills the bacteria directly.

People have been using this medicine for a long time. Cefazolin was first patented in the year 1967. It began to be used in hospitals and shops in 1971.

It was originally sold under the trade name Nostof by GlaxoSmithKline. Today, it is available as a generic medicine, which makes it more affordable. There are many other trade names for it, such as Kefzol or Zolicef. It is a well-known tool in the world of medicine.

Cefazolin is very good at fighting certain types of bacteria. It works well against gram-positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus. It can also fight some gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli.

However, it does not work against all germs. It cannot fight MRSA, which is a type of resistant bacteria. It also does not work against Enterococcus or certain other groups. Doctors must choose the right medicine based on which bacteria are causing the sickness.

Most people can take cefazolin safely, but there are some things to know. It is usually given as an injection into a muscle or a vein. Some people might experience side effects like vomiting, diarrhea, or a rash.

In the past, people thought those with penicillin allergies should not use it. Now, studies show it is often safe for almost all patients. However, doctors still watch these patients closely to be sure. It is also generally safe for pregnant women to use.
