Freeman is of the Kuku-yalanji and Birri-gubba peoples. This means she is an Indigenous Australian. She is a very fast athlete who made people feel great pride. Her speed helped her become one of the best runners in the world. She even ranks as the 11th-fastest woman of all time.

Running at a high level takes a lot of hard work and practice. Freeman had many different coaches throughout her life. In 1987, she worked with a coach named Mike Danila. Later, she was coached by her stepfather, Bruce Barber. For most of her career, she worked with coach Peter Fortune. She followed a strict training regime to stay strong. This helped her run her best time of 48.63 seconds in a 400 metre race.

Freeman's journey into sports started when she was very young. She grew up in Mackay, Queensland, with three brothers. She played many sports like basketball, netball, and touch football. Her father, Norman, was also a fast rugby league player. In 1990, she won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland. She was only 16 years old when she did this. This made her the first Aboriginal person to win a gold medal at those games.

Many big moments happened during her racing career. In 1994, she had a breakthrough season in Canada. She won gold medals in both the 200 m and 400 m races. At the 1996 Olympics, she won a silver medal. Her biggest moment was at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. She lit the Olympic Flame and then won the gold medal in the 400 m. After winning, she carried both the Australian and Aboriginal flags on a victory lap.

After she stopped racing in 2003, Freeman began helping others. She started the Cathy Freeman Foundation in 2007. This group helps Indigenous children in remote areas go to school. The foundation works to close the gap in education. She has also been an ambassador for several different groups. She wants to make sure all children have a chance to learn. Her life shows how sports can lead to helping a whole community.
