Caterpillar Inc., often called CAT, is a leading American manufacturer of engineering equipment.

The company specializes in heavy machinery for construction and mining. It currently holds the title of the world's largest manufacturer of construction equipment. In 2018, Caterpillar was ranked 73rd on the Fortune 500 list. It also appeared at number 265 on the Global Fortune 500 list. Because of its massive economic impact, its stock is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The company's technology began as a solution to a difficult agricultural problem. In the 1890s, the Holt Manufacturing Company produced steam tractors. These machines were extremely heavy and often sank into the soft soil of California's San Joaquin Valley.

Benjamin Holt tried increasing the size and width of the wheels to fix this. However, larger wheels made the tractors complex, expensive, and hard to maintain. Another idea was to lay temporary plank roads, but this was too slow and costly. Holt eventually decided to wrap wooden planks around the wheels using chains. On November 24, 1904, he successfully tested this updated machine on the soggy land of Roberts Island.

The name "Caterpillar" came from the visual movement of these new tracks. A photographer named Charles Clements observed the machine through his camera lens. He noticed the way the tracks rose and fell over the carrier rollers. He remarked that the movement looked like a caterpillar. Holt embraced this metaphor and adopted it as the name.

While some sources suggest British soldiers used the term in 1907, the name stuck. By 1909, Holt received his first patent for a practical continuous track. He called this invention an improved "Traction Engine." This technology allowed machines to move across unstable ground without sinking.

Caterpillar's history is defined by major mergers and shifts in leadership. In 1910, the Holt Caterpillar Company opened a plant in East Peoria, Illinois. This expansion was very profitable, and by 1912, the company was exporting tractors to Argentina, Canada, and Mexico.

However, the company faced a difficult transition after World War I. The heavy artillery tractors used in the war were not useful for farmers. This led to a period of debt and economic struggle. To survive, the Holt company merged with its competitor, the C. L. Best Tractor Company, in 1925. This merger created the Caterpillar Tractor Co. and established Clarence Leo Best as CEO.

Since the merger, the company has grown through technological and geographic changes. Caterpillar transitioned from using gasoline engines to adopting diesel engines. During World War II, their products were used by the U.S. Navy's Seabees to build airfields in the Pacific.

The company has also moved its headquarters several times. After many years in Peoria, Illinois, the company planned a move to Deerfield in 2017. Eventually, in June 2022, Caterpillar announced it would move its global headquarters to Irving, Texas. This move was made to serve the best strategic interests of the company.

The Caterpillar brand extends beyond heavy machinery into consumer products. The company licenses its name for various items, including clothing and workwear boots.

This branding ensures that their equipment stands out on construction sites and in mines around the world.

Caterpillar's influence can be seen in various industrial and military systems. Their track-laying technology even served as an inspiration for the development of the British tank.
