Lenovo Group Limited is a major multinational technology corporation.

The company's history began as an offshoot of a state-owned research institute.
Growth occurred through strategic shifts and successful product development. In 1990, Legend began marketing computers under its own brand name. One notable success was a circuit board that allowed IBM-compatible computers to process Chinese characters. In 1994, the company went public through a Hong Kong IPO. This allowed them to raise capital to expand into Europe, North America, and Australia. By 1998, the company held 43 percent of the domestic computer market in China. A major milestone was the 1998 release of the Tianxi computer. This device featured a specialized button to connect users instantly to the internet. The Tianxi became a massive success, selling over 1,000,000 units in the year 2000 alone.
A major turning point arrived through a massive corporate merger. In 2005, Lenovo merged with IBM's personal computer business.
The company also underwent a significant rebranding process. For its first twenty years, the company used the English name Legend. However, in 2002, leader Yang Yuanqing decided to change the name to expand globally. The name Legend was already used by many businesses in different countries. In April 2003, the company announced the new name, Lenovo. The name is a portmanteau, or a blend, of "Le" from Legend and "novo," which is Latin for "new."
Today, Lenovo manages several distinct product lines and brands.

Lenovo's market dominance is reflected in its sales figures. In 2013, the company became the world's largest personal computer vendor by unit sales. It has maintained this leading position through 2024. The company's reach extends from small consumer devices to massive industrial tools. They manufacture workstations, servers, and even supercomputers. Their technology supports everything from individual students to large-scale data storage systems. This wide variety of products connects Lenovo to many different areas of modern digital life.
