It belongs to a group of things called flavonoids. These help plants act as antioxidants. An antioxidant is a way a plant protects itself.

Many foods have catechins in them. You can find them in tea and cacao. Grapes and peaches have them too. Cocoa has a very high amount.

Prune juice and broad bean pods also have them. They can make your mouth feel a little dry. This dry feeling is called astringent.

Plants make catechin through a long set of steps. This way of making it is called biosynthesis.

It starts with a part called L-phenylalanine. Many enzymes, which are tiny workers in the plant, help. They change the parts step by step. One enzyme is called chalcone synthase. It helps make the building blocks.

Some plants use catechin to fight neighbors. The spotted knapweed plant lets it out through its roots. This can stop other plants from growing nearby. It might even work like a tiny medicine to kill root cells. This helps the knapweed take over more space.
