Three main types are dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. Epinephrine is also called adrenaline. These chemicals help with the fight-or-flight response. This is how your body gets ready to act fast. When you feel stress, these tools help you. They can make your heart beat faster. They can also raise your blood pressure.

Your body makes these from an amino acid. An amino acid is a tiny part of protein. We get these from the food we eat. A special part of the body called the adrenal medulla makes them. They also come from parts of your nervous system.

Cells use a set of steps to make them. First, they turn tyrosine into L-DOPA. Then, they make dopamine. Some cells turn dopamine into norepinephrine. Other cells turn it into epinephrine.

After they do their job, the body breaks them down. This keeps the levels just right. Some of the pieces leave the body in your urine.
