Many people have lived as castaways. In 1522, a sailor named Gonzalo de Vigo left a ship. He lived with local people for four years. He was found in Guam in 1526. In 1542, Marguerite de la Rocque was left on an island. She hunted wild animals to stay alive. Later, fishermen rescued her.

Some people chose to stay on islands. Alexander Selkirk stayed on an island for over four years. He built huts and hunted animals. His story may have inspired the book Robinson Crusoe. Other people faced hard times. In 1722, Philip Ashton was left in a jungle by pirates. He survived for 16 months. He even met another castaway who gave him a knife.
