A carriage is a vehicle for passengers pulled by horses. It can have two or four wheels.

These vehicles were a common way to travel for wealthy people in Europe. They were used during the Roman Empire and again from around 1600 until 1900. After that, motor cars became the main way people moved around. Some second-hand carriages were used like modern taxis for public transport. Today, we still see them in royal parades or for tourists in warm countries.

How a carriage works depends on its parts. The body sits on an undercarriage made of wheels and axles.

To make the ride smooth, carriages use suspension. This keeps the passengers from feeling every bump in the road. Some carriages use leather straps called thoroughbraces to act as springs. Other carriages use steel springs to soak up the movement. A dashboard made of wood or leather sits at the front to stop mud from splashing the passengers.

History shows that wheeled vehicles have been around for a very long time. Archaeologists found four-wheeled wagons in Bronze Age Europe. They also found chariots in China by the late second millennium BCE.

Later, people made technical improvements like a pivoting front axle. This helped carriages turn much easier. In the 15th and 16th centuries, a lighter and faster type of carriage called a coach was made. It is named after the Hungarian town of Kocs. By the late 16th century, these coaches were used for long trips across Europe.

There are many specific parts to name on a carriage. A coach often has a fixed roof. If the roof can fold back, it is called a calash.

The driver sits on a seat called a box. If a seat is raised on an iron frame, it is called a dickey-seat. For storage, carriages have a boot. This term is still used for the storage part of cars today. Even the wheels have special names. The center is the nave, and the pieces reaching out are spokes. The outer circle is made of curved wood called felloes.

Carriages connect to things you see every day. For example, the word "car" comes from Old Northern French. It used to mean a two-wheeled cart for goods. In the United States, early automobiles were even called "horseless carriages."

You might also see carriages used in sports today. This is called competitive driving. Some modern versions use metal wheels and rubber tires. These are much different from the wooden wheels used in the past.
