In 1838, the Chisholm family moved to Australia. They sailed on a ship called the Emerald Isle. They arrived in Sydney in October of that year. Caroline saw that many new people had a hard time. Many young women arrived without any money or jobs. This was a very difficult situation for them. Caroline wanted to find them safe places to stay. She started a group to run women's shelters. She also helped them find permanent homes and work.

Caroline worked very hard for many years in Australia. She did not take money for her kind work. She wanted to be independent and help everyone. In just seven years, she helped 11,000 people. She helped them find both homes and jobs. In 1842, she rented two houses in East Maitland. She turned them into a hostel for immigrants. This building is now called Caroline Chisholm Cottage. It is a special piece of history in New South Wales.

Later, Caroline moved back to England to help more people. In 1849, she started the Family Colonisation Loan Society. This group helped families pay for ship tickets. The group lent half the cost of the fare. Families would pay the money back after two years. This helped many families move to Australia together. Her work even helped make ship travel safer for everyone. By 1854, her society helped over 3,000 people travel.
