Mary G. Harris Jones was a famous leader for workers.

She was born in Ireland around 1837. Her family moved to North America because of the Great Famine. This was a time of great hunger in Ireland. They moved when Mary was ten years old. Later, she worked as a teacher in Michigan. She also worked as a dressmaker in Chicago. These jobs helped her learn about the lives of many people.

Mary's life was very hard for a long time. In 1867, she lost her husband and four children to yellow fever. Then, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed her home and shop. These losses changed her path in life. She began to help workers join groups called unions. She joined the Knights of Labor first. Later, she worked with the United Mine Workers. She wanted workers to have better lives and fair pay.

She became a very famous and powerful speaker. Around 1897, people began calling her "Mother Jones." She acted like a mother to the workers. She often called the men "her boys." She wore black dresses and spoke with a strong voice. Some people even called her "the most dangerous woman in America." They said this because she was so good at organizing strikes. She was not afraid to stand up to powerful mine owners.

One of her most famous acts was helping children. In 1903, she organized the "March of the Mill Children." Many young children were working in dangerous silk mills and mines. They were not going to school like they should.

The children marched 125 miles from Philadelphia to New York. They wanted to meet President Theodore Roosevelt. They carried banners that said they wanted to go to school. This march helped many people notice the problem of child labor.

Mary Jones spent her whole life fighting for others. She even faced arrest and prison for her work. She helped organize workers in West Virginia and Colorado. She was a very important part of the labor movement in America.
