It grows in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. These trees like warm, dry places. They can live through long times without rain. This is because they are xerophytes, which means they can handle drought.

The leaves are long and grow in a pattern called pinnate. This means they have many small parts on one stem.

Carob trees make sweet fruit in long pods. It takes a full year for these pods to ripen. Most trees are dioecious. This means some trees are male and some are female. Only the female trees make the fruit. When the pods fall, animals like pigs eat them. This helps spread the seeds to new places.

People use carob in many ways. They grind the pulp into a powder or chips. People often use it as a substitute for chocolate. The seeds are also useful. They make carob gum. This is a thickening agent used in food.
