Carlo Rubbia

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Carlo Rubbia is a famous scientist from Italy. He studies particle physics. This is the study of the tiny bits that make up our world.

As a boy, he played with old radio tools. This helped him learn about science. Later, he went to a big lab called CERN. He wanted to find new particles. He suggested a new way to use a machine. This machine is a particle collider. It crashes tiny bits together at high speeds.

Rubbia used a special trick to make this work. It is called stochastic cooling. This trick keeps a beam of particles steady and focused. With this help, his team found the W and Z bosons. These are tiny particles that carry the weak force. The weak force helps the sun burn. It also makes atoms break down.

For this work, Rubbia won the Nobel Prize in 1984. He also led CERN for many years. He helped make the Web free for everyone to use. Today, he still thinks of new ways to make clean energy.
