Carbon is the main building block for all life on Earth.

It makes up about half of the dry weight of living things. Carbon atoms are very special. Each atom can make four bonds. A bond is a link to another atom. This lets carbon form long chains and complex shapes. We call these long chains polymers.

These chains make up important parts of our bodies. They make proteins, which build our structures. They also make DNA, which carries our genetic code. Carbon also helps make fats and sugars. These give living things power to grow.

Water is also needed for this work. Liquid water helps carbon molecules bond together. Plants use water and light to make food. This is called photosynthesis. This process turns light and air into energy.

Some people wonder if life could use other things. Silicon is a possible choice. It can also make four bonds. However, silicon does not make long chains as easily as carbon. Because of this, carbon is the best for life.
