Carbon is the core element for all known life on Earth. It is a key part of every complex biological molecule we know. In fact, carbon makes up about 45% to 50% of all dry biomass. This means if you took all living things and removed the water, nearly half would be carbon.

A 2018 study found that carbon makes up about 550 billion tons of all life on our planet. Carbon atoms bond with other elements like oxygen and hydrogen. They also bond with nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. Scientists use the name CHNOPS to remember these important elements.

Carbon works like a skeleton for the molecules that build life. Each carbon atom has four valence electrons. These electrons allow the atom to form up to four bonds at the same time. Because of this, carbon atoms can link to each other very easily. This process is called catenation. It allows carbon to build long chains and large shapes called polymers.

These molecules are easy for enzymes to move and change. Enzymes are special tools that help chemical reactions happen in living things. One important enzyme is called carbonic anhydrase. It helps manage how carbon dioxide and water interact in the body.

Many different types of molecules rely on these carbon chains. Proteins are the building blocks that create the structures of living things. These proteins are made of smaller pieces called amino acids. Other important molecules include nucleic acids, like DNA and RNA, which carry genetic information. Lipids are used to store energy in a concentrated way. Carbohydrates, such as sugars and starch, also store energy for cells to use. Even the wax on a plant or the cholesterol in a brain is built from carbon.

Life also needs liquid water to make these carbon bonds work. Water helps carbon dioxide change into other useful things. In plants, water is used during photosynthesis. This is the way plants turn light and carbon dioxide into stored energy.

Carbon is also part of a huge system called the carbon cycle. This cycle moves carbon through the air, the ground, and living things. Even the movement of Earth's plates, known as plate tectonics, is linked to carbon. Long ago, certain life forms helped create the oxygen that helped form our continents.

Scientists often wonder if life could exist using other elements. Some people think silicon might be a good substitute. Silicon is in the same group as carbon and can also make four bonds. However, silicon usually forms crystals instead of long, flexible chains. It also reacts differently when it is near water. Because of this, carbon is much better for building complex life.

You might see stories about silicon-based life in science fiction movies. Characters in stories like Star Trek or The X-Files often imagine life made of silicon. But on Earth, carbon remains the most important builder of all.
