A car, or an automobile, is a motor vehicle designed with wheels. Most definitions describe cars as vehicles that run primarily on roads. They typically seat between one and eight people. Their main purpose is to transport people rather than heavy cargo. As of 2025, there are over 1.6 billion cars in use across the world.

These machines have changed how humans move. They offer on-demand transportation and personal independence. This mobility allows people to travel flexibly from place to place.

Modern cars rely on different types of power to move. Most cars in use during the early 2020s use an internal combustion engine. This engine works through the combustion of fossil fuels. Combustion is a process where fuel burns to create energy.

Other vehicles use electricity instead of liquid fuel. Electric cars were actually invented very early in automotive history. However, they only became commercially available in the 2000s. They became widespread during the 2020s. Moving from fossil fuels to electric power is a key part of many climate change mitigation scenarios.

Vehicles have become much more complex over many decades. Early models were simple, but modern cars have many specialized controls. These controls manage driving, parking, and passenger comfort. They also operate various lamps for visibility.

Manufacturers have added many advanced features over time. These include air conditioning and navigation systems. Some cars even have rear-reversing cameras and in-car entertainment. These additions make the driving experience more integrated with modern technology.

The history of the car began with steam power. In 1672, Ferdinand Verbiest designed a steam machine for the Kangxi Emperor. It was a scale-model toy and could not carry people.

Later, in 1769, Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built a steam-powered tricycle. He also made steam tractors for the French Army. However, these early machines faced problems with water supply. They also struggled to maintain steady steam pressure.

Other inventors like Richard Trevithick built steam locomotives in 1801. These were often of little practical use for everyday travel.

Internal combustion engines changed everything in the 19th century. In 1807, the Niépce brothers created a device called a Pyréolophore. It used a mixture of coal dust, resin, and Lycopodium powder. In that same year, François Isaac de Rivaz built a vehicle using hydrogen and oxygen. Neither design was successful at the time. The true birth of the modern car happened in 1886.

German inventor Carl Benz patented the Benz Patent-Motorwagen that year. His engine made it possible to power a practical vehicle. In 1888, his wife Bertha Benz took the first long-distance road trip. She did this to prove the car was ready for real roads.

Mass production made cars available to the general public. In 1901, the Oldsmobile Curved Dash became a mass-produced vehicle. Later, the 1908 Ford Model T became a mass-affordable car.

These American innovations changed how people traveled. In the United States, cars quickly replaced horse-drawn carriages. In Europe, demand grew significantly after World War II. Today, car usage is increasing rapidly in newly industrialized countries like China and India.

Using cars involves many different costs and benefits. For an individual, costs include fuel, repairs, and insurance. There are also costs for parking, taxes, and vehicle depreciation.

For society, cars require resources to build and roads to drive on. They can cause air pollution, noise pollution, and road congestion. Traffic collisions are also the largest cause of injury-related deaths globally.

However, the benefits are also large. The automotive industry creates many jobs and wealth. Cars also provide leisure and travel opportunities that improve societal wellbeing.
