Many things made people want to join. The colonies needed to trade with each other. They also wanted to build a big railway. This train track would link different areas. Some leaders also wanted to stay safe from pressure from the United States.

Leaders met in big meetings to plan. They met in Charlottetown and Quebec. They also met in London. These men are often called the Fathers of Confederation.

On July 1, 1867, the union began. At first, there were only four provinces. They were Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.
