Long ago, people lived in a land called Canaan. They believed in many gods. This is called polytheism.

People told many stories about these gods. One famous story is the Baal Cycle. In this story, Baal fights a god of death named Mot. When Mot swallows Baal, the rain stops. This makes the land very dry. Later, Baal returns to bring rain back to the earth.

People also had special ways to honor the dead. They believed a soul left the body after death. They left food and drink for those who passed away.

We know about these beliefs from old things found in the ground. These include clay tablets and statues. Most of what we know comes from a place called Ugarit. These finds help us see how people lived long ago.
