The word itself can mean a god or a deity. In many old stories, El was a supreme god. He was a king and a wise father. Some people believed he was the creator of all people.

He also had many children who were gods. These included gods like Baal, Yam, and Mot. El had many special names to show his power. One name was "Bull El." Another was "Father of Mankind." These names showed he had wisdom and authority. Some texts say he lived near the source of two rivers. He might have lived in a tent. This may be why some cities had no temple for him. Over time, ideas about El changed. In Israel, some people believed his traits moved to a god named Yahweh. This is a way that different beliefs can merge. The name El still lives on today. It is found in names like Michael and Gabriel.
