Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting. It turns letters into visual art. Artists design and execute characters using many tools. This might include a pen, an ink brush, or other instruments.

In the Islamic world and East Asia, it is a very important art form. The shape of the writing often matches the meaning of the words. Modern Western calligraphy is used for many things. You might see it on wedding invitations or in logo designs. It is also used for maps, movie props, and even birth certificates.

To make calligraphy, artists use specific tools and materials. In the West, people often use pens with different nibs. Some nibs are flat, while others are round or pointed. Some styles, like Gothic script, need a special stub nib pen.

In Asia, calligraphers often use a penknife called a makta to cut reed pens. These natural reeds allow for more movement than metal pens. Artists also use ink, paper, and templates. Some use parchment or vellum because they can erase mistakes with a knife. Others use lightboxes to help them draw straight lines.

Calligraphy has a very long and deep history. In ancient China, the oldest characters were oracle bone script. These were carved onto ox bones and turtle shells.

Rulers used these bones to learn about weather or harvests. Over time, new styles like bronzeware script and seal script grew. The Mao Gong ding is a famous example of bronzeware script. It has 500 characters carved into it. This is the largest number of bronze inscriptions ever found. In 220 BCE, Emperor Qin Shi Huang helped unify characters. He created a set of 3,300 standardized small seal characters.

Different cultures have developed their own special ways of writing. In East Asia, calligraphy is part of many traditions. Chinese calligraphy is called shufa. In Japan, it is called shodō. Korean calligraphy is known as seoye.

These artists often use the "Four Treasures of the Study." These treasures are ink brushes, Chinese ink, paper, and inkstones. In Tibet, calligraphy is central to the culture. It is used for religious writing and on prayer wheels. In the Philippines, many groups use ancient Suyat scripts. Some of these scripts are now being brought back by artists.

Calligraphy connects to many other types of art. In East Asia, it influenced ink and wash painting. This style of painting uses the same tools as calligraphy.

The way a person moves their brush changes the final look. The speed and pressure of the hand give the characters "spirit." A skilled artist can make strokes thin or bold. They can make the edges smooth or rough. This skill shows how much control they have over their tools. Calligraphy remains a way to give form to signs in a beautiful way.
