Many different groups lived in Byblos through history. These groups include the Egyptians and the Romans. The city was a very important place for trade. For example, people brought papyrus from Egypt to Byblos. This plant was used to make paper. The Greek name for the city even helped give us the word "Bible."

Byblos is also famous for writing. The Phoenician people developed an alphabet there. This old way of writing led to the letters we use today.
