Robert Stirm had been a prisoner since October 27, 1967. He was shot down while leading a flight of F-105 planes. He was finally released on March 14, 1973. His plane, a C-141 Starlifter, was nicknamed the "Hanoi Taxi."

On the day he arrived, almost 400 family members were there to meet him. Even though only twenty prisoners arrived on that plane, the crowd was huge. This moment was part of a larger event called Operation Homecoming.

The photograph is very important because it won the Pulitzer Prize. This is a very high honor for news photography. The photo shows a happy reunion, but the story had a sad part too. Robert learned his marriage was over just three days before he arrived home. He and his wife, Loretta, divorced in 1974. Despite this, the image remains a symbol of healing for the country. It reminds us of the families who were reunited and those who were not.
