A buffet is a special way to serve meals to many people. Instead of having a server bring food to your seat, the food is placed in a public area.

This allows diners to see every dish at once. You can immediately choose exactly what you want to eat. You also get to decide how much of each food to take. This makes eating at a buffet feel very personal and free. It is a great way to feed large groups at hotels or big parties.

Some buffets are called finger buffets. These use small foods like pizza slices or cupcakes that you can eat with your hands. In some restaurants, you pay one set price for all-you-can-eat food. Other places might charge you based on the weight of your plate. You might even see a conveyor belt sushi restaurant where food moves past you on a belt.
