Buckwheat

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Buckwheat is a flowering plant. It has red stems and pink or white flowers. Even though its name sounds like wheat, it is not a grass. It is actually a pseudocereal. This means its seeds have a lot of starch. Because of this, people can cook and eat them like grain.

Buckwheat grew in China a long time ago. It has since spread to many places like Africa and the Americas. It grows very fast. It only takes 10 to 12 weeks to grow. This makes it a good cover crop. A cover crop is a plant grown to protect the soil.

Many people enjoy eating buckwheat. In Japan, people eat soba noodles made from it. In India, people eat buckwheat during special festivals. It is also good for people with celiac disease. This is because buckwheat has no gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat.

Bees love the flowers. They make a dark, strong honey from the nectar. Some people use the hard outer shells to fill pillows. However, some people are allergic to buckwheat. They must be careful when eating it.
