They named many landmarks used today, such as Cape Constantine and Becharof Lake. The village of Naknek also changed names several times under Russian records.
Today, the bay is world-famous for its massive salmon runs. It hosts the largest salmon run on the planet. Five different species of Eastern Pacific salmon spawn in the freshwater tributaries. These include Chinook, Sockeye, Chum, Coho, and Pink salmon. Sockeye salmon, also called red salmon, are particularly significant. They represent about 15 percent of all wild salmon harvests globally. 
Several industries support the people living in this remote region. Commercial fishing is supported by many local canneries. These facilities process and preserve the salmon on-site to maintain freshness. Other industries include sport fishing, hunting, and tourism. Many visitors come to see Katmai National Park and Preserve. People also travel there to fish for trout, such as the Leopard rainbow trout. 
Modern challenges involve the balance between industry and environmental protection. There has been significant interest in mining and oil development. For example, the proposed Pebble Mine project sought to extract copper, gold, and molybdenum. This project faced heavy opposition from residents and Tribes. Critics worried about the 10 billion tons of mining waste. They also feared for the local fisheries and wildlife. Eventually, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency used the Clean Water Act to stop the project. This highlights the ongoing tension between resource extraction and preserving the natural world.
