It reaches southwest from the main part of Alaska toward the Aleutian Islands. This land acts like a wall between two different bodies of water. On one side is the deep Pacific Ocean. On the other side is Bristol Bay, which is part of the Bering Sea.

Some people also call it the Aleut Peninsula. It is a very important part of Southwest Alaska. It even has its own local government area called the Lake and Peninsula borough.

The land here looks very different depending on where you stand. The southern side is rugged and full of high mountains. These mountains were made by plates of the Earth moving under each other. The Aleutian Range runs along the whole length of the peninsula.

This range is full of active volcanoes. Pavlof Volcano is the most active one in the area. The northern side is much different because it is flat and marshy. This side was shaped by many years of erosion.

The water on the north side is shallow and muddy. The water on the south side is deep and clear.

The weather on the peninsula can be quite intense. Coastal areas often face heavy storms, strong winds, and lots of rain. In the winter, temperatures stay quite low. In the summer, it can still be quite chilly.

This strip of land serves as a natural divider. It separates the Pacific Ocean from Bristol Bay. Bristol Bay is a large arm of the Bering Sea. Some people also call this area the Aleut Peninsula or the Aleutian Peninsula. In some older Russian literature, the term referred to the entire northwestern part of North America. Today, the peninsula is a vital part of the Alaskan landscape. It is home to the Lake and Peninsula borough. This borough is the Alaskan version of a county.

The geography of the peninsula is shaped by powerful tectonic activity. The southern side is very rugged and mountainous. This landscape was created by the North Pacific Plate. This tectonic plate is subsiding under a western section of the North American Plate. This movement causes the land to uplift. The Aleutian Range runs along the entire length of the peninsula. This range is a very active volcanic mountain range.

In contrast, the northern side is generally flat and marshy. This area resulted from millennia of erosion and seismic stability. The two sides also have very different coastlines. The northern Bristol Bay side is shallow, muddy, and turbid. It also experiences extreme tides. The Pacific side is known as the "ring of fire." This side has deep, clear water and smaller tidal activity.

Volcanic activity is a defining feature of this region. The Aleutian Range contains many active volcanoes. Pavlof Volcano is the most active volcano in this range.

The peninsula also contains several important protected areas. These include the Katmai National Park and Preserve. Other areas are the Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve. There are also several wildlife refuges. These are the Becharof, Alaska Peninsula, and Izembek National Wildlife Refuges. These protected lands help preserve the unique environment. The landscape includes diverse features like the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes.

The climate on the peninsula is quite intense. Coastal areas face heavy rain, strong winds, and intense storms. Winter temperatures average between -36°C and -26°C. Summer temperatures average between 2°C and 11°C. At higher elevations, frost can occur on any day of the year. The climate is similar to parts of Iceland or Scotland. It is also similar to Tierra del Fuego. The vegetation is mostly made of wet tundra. You will also find grassy meadows and shrub-lands.

The peninsula supports some of the largest undisturbed wildlife populations in the United States. Large herds of caribou, moose, and wolves live here. You can also find willow ptarmigan.

The area is famous for its Alaskan brown bear populations. These bears are very numerous near the McNeil River and Katmai. This is because they feed on massive sockeye salmon runs. These salmon, known scientifically as Oncorhynchus nerka, are the largest in the world. The many large lakes on the peninsula are essential to their lifecycle. The salmon swim from the sea into these lakes to spawn. Their offspring, called fry, live in the deep lakes for one or two years. This provides them with abundant food before they migrate to the sea.

Marine life is also very abundant in the surrounding waters. Large seabird colonies exist along the coast. Between the peninsula and Kamchatka, there are large populations of sea mammals. These include harbor seals and ringed seals. You can also find northern fur seals.

Other animals include whales, porpoises, sea otters, and sea lions. The rugged southern half belongs to the Alaska Peninsula montane taiga ecoregion. This includes the Kodiak Archipelago, which is home to even more bears.

Human communities are found primarily along the coast. Several well-known villages exist on the peninsula. These include Cold Bay, King Cove, and Perryville. Other villages are Chignik, Chignik Lake, Chignik Lagoon, and Port Moller. Most residents in these villages are Alaska Natives. The people here are mostly dependent on the fishing industry for sustenance. The peninsula is organized into four adjacent boroughs. These are the Aleutians East, Bristol Bay, Kodiak Island, and Lake and Peninsula boroughs. The Lake and Peninsula Borough covers most of the territory.
