geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Brazos River is a very important waterway in the United States. It is the 14th longest river in the country. The river starts at Blackwater Draw in Roosevelt County, New Mexico. From there, it flows southeast through the middle of Texas. It finally reaches the Gulf of Mexico near the town of Freeport.

Early Spanish explorers gave the river a very long name. They called it Río de los Brazos de Dios. This means "The River of the Arms of God." They used this name because it was the first water found by thirsty travelers.

Many smaller streams, called tributaries, flow into the main river. The river begins where the Salt Fork and Double Mountain Fork meet. The Clear Fork Brazos River also joins the main river near Graham. Other streams like the Paluxy and Bosque rivers join it later.

The river travels past many famous places. It flows through Waco and near the Baylor University campus. It also passes by Bryan and College Station. The river moves through Fort Bend County before it reaches the sea. This large area of land is called a watershed.

History is tied closely to these waters. In 1822, many people moved to the lower river valley. Stephen F. Austin founded a colony at San Felipe de Austin. A place called Washington-on-the-Brazos is known as the birthplace of Texas. This is where Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836.

The river was also a place for battles between navies. Long ago, steamboats used the river to move people and goods. Later, railroads became a more reliable way to travel. Even today, the river remains a key part of the Texas story.

People have changed the river to help them live. There are 19 major reservoirs along the Brazos. Three big dams sit north of Waco. These form Possum Kingdom Lake, Lake Granbury, and Lake Whitney.

Lake Granbury was the last one finished in 1969. The Whitney Dam is very useful for the people living nearby. It provides electricity and helps farmers grow cotton in the valley. A smaller dam near Waco creates a local town lake. These structures help control floods and store water for many uses.

Today, the Brazos River is a place for fun and work. Many people visit to go fishing for largemouth bass. It is also a great spot for canoeing and paddling.

You can even go camping on the sandbars. The sandbars are considered public property for everyone to use. Many scout camps are also located along the river banks. People use the water for power and for growing crops. It is a busy and living part of the landscape.
