The river starts in New Mexico. It flows southeast through the center of Texas. It ends at the Gulf of Mexico. Early explorers gave it a long name. They called it the River of the Arms of God. They chose this name because it was the first water they found.

Many smaller streams join the Brazos. These streams help the river grow. Some people built dams to hold the water. This makes large lakes like Possum Kingdom Lake. One dam, the Whitney Dam, makes power for homes. It also helps farmers grow cotton.

The river is a big part of Texas history. A place called Washington-on-the-Brazos is known as the birthplace of Texas. Long ago, steamboats used the river to travel. Today, people visit the river for fun. You can go fishing or camping on the sandbars. Many people like to paddle boats on the water. It is a great place to see nature.
