The Brahmo Samaj is a religious movement from India. It began in Calcutta on August 20, 1828. Two men started it. Their names were Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Dwarkanath Tagore. They wanted to change old customs. This movement helped start the Bengal Renaissance.

Many people follow the ideas of the Brahmo Samaj. The name means a community of people who know Brahman. Brahman is the ultimate reality. The group believes in one God. This God made and keeps the universe. They do not worship many gods or use idols. They also believe in using reason and conscience.

This group works to make society better. They do not care about caste. They welcome all kinds of people to their meetings. They fought to stop bad practices. For example, they worked against child marriage. They also helped people who wanted to remarry after being widows.

There are different groups within the movement. Some are called Anusthanic Brahmos. They believe every being is a part of God. Other groups have different ideas about the soul. Today, many people in India and Bangladesh still follow these paths.
