Brahmagupta was a brilliant thinker from ancient India. He was a mathematician and an astronomer. He changed how we think about numbers forever. One of his greatest ideas was about zero. Before him, people used zero as a placeholder. It was just a way to show a space. Brahmagupta treated zero as a real number. He wrote rules for how to use it. This helped math become much more powerful.

He was a master of many math tools. He wrote about algebra and geometry. He also studied trigonometry and how to use algorithms. An algorithm is a step-by-step way to solve a problem. He gave a clear way to solve quadratic equations. These are equations with a squared number in them. He even used a method called "the pulverizer." This helped him solve equations with many unknown parts.

Brahmagupta lived a very busy life. He was born in 598 CE. His home was the town of Bhillamala. This was in a place called Gurjaradesa. It was a large center for learning in India. He studied many famous astronomers from the past. In 628, he wrote his first big book. It was called the Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta. He wrote this book when he was thirty years old. Later, he moved to the city of Ujjaini.

His work was very important for science. He was a scholar of the Brahmapaksha school. He was the first Indian to describe gravity. He called this force "gurutvākarṣaṇam" in Sanskrit. He saw it as an attractive force. He wrote a second book in 665. This book was called the Khandakhadyaka. It was a practical guide for students. He died in the year 668 CE.

His ideas traveled across the whole world. Many years later, his books were translated into Arabic. This happened in the court of Caliph Al-Mansur. These translations helped spread the decimal number system. A famous mathematician named Al-Khwarizmi used his work. Eventually, these ideas reached Europe in the 13th century. Today, we still use his math every day. We use his methods for adding and subtracting. His legacy lives on in every classroom.
