He lived during a golden age of math and science. He was born around 476 CE. He likely lived in a place called Kusumapura. Today, we know this city as Patna in Bihar. Some people believe he might have led the famous Nalanda university. He was a master of many different subjects. These included math, stars, and even how living things work.

Aryabhata used math to explain the world around him. He studied how to measure circles very accurately. He used a rule to find the number called pi. His rule was very close to the true value. He also worked with a place-value system. This system uses the position of a digit to show its size. He did not use a symbol for zero. However, his system worked as if zero were there. This helped him do very hard math problems.

His most famous book is called the Aryabhatiya. This book is made of 108 short verses. These verses act like memory aids for big ideas. The book covers many parts of math. It includes arithmetic and algebra. It also teaches trigonometry, which is the math of triangles. One part of the book explains the shape of the Earth. Another part explains why we have day and night.

Aryabhata was also a very early physicist. He understood how motion works in a special way. He compared the stars to things seen from a boat. He said stars look like they move backward. This happens because the person in the boat is moving forward. He realized the Earth is actually the thing that is moving. This explains why the stars seem to travel across the sky.

His ideas changed how people saw the universe. His work traveled far from India. It was translated into Arabic in the 9th century. Later, it was translated into Latin in Europe. These translations helped math grow all over the world. Even today, his name is remembered with great respect. India even named its very first satellite after him.
