These plants belong to a group called Pteridium. They are very successful because they can grow in many places. You can find them on every continent except for Antarctica.

They like to grow in moorlands and on the sides of hills. This is because they need soil that drains water well. Bracken is a very tough plant that can grow in many types of soil. It can even grow in soil with a pH as low as 2.8.

Bracken does not use seeds or fruit to make new plants. Instead, it uses tiny things called spores to reproduce. These spores are kept in small structures called sori.

In most ferns, sori are circles near the middle of the leaf. However, bracken sori sit in a line near the leaf edge. The plant also grows from a thick rootstock underground. This rootstock can travel more than one metre through the dirt. This helps the plant form thick groups called thickets.

Scientists have found that bracken is a very old plant. Fossil records show it existed during the Eocene period. This means it is at least 55 million years old. In the past, people thought there was only one kind of bracken. This was called Pteridium aquilinum. Now, experts believe there are about ten different species. The word bracken actually comes from Old Norse. It is related to words for fern in Swedish and Danish.

Bracken is a very fast grower and can be quite invasive. It can expand its area by 1% to 3% every year.

It can take over land from other plants like grasses and heather. It even releases chemicals into the soil to stop other plants from growing. This makes it a pioneer plant that colonizes land quickly. Because it grows so fast, it can change the whole landscape. Some areas even become large prairies made of ferns.

Many cultures have used bracken for food and other needs. In East Asia, people eat the young, curled fronds called fiddleheads.

In Korea, they are used in a rice dish called bibimbap. In Japan, they are used to make a dessert called warabimochi.

However, bracken can be dangerous because it contains a chemical called ptaquiloside. This chemical can cause cancer in humans and animals. Cooking the plant in heat or soaking it can help make it safe.
